Cam McBride History Reflect on your comprehension of the idea of ‘history’. Has this changed in the initial three weeks of the course? Assuming this is the case, how? If not, how could you go to your current comprehension of how history functions? Examine in any event two of the accompanying: ‘cultural change’; the ‘Great Men’ hypothesis of history; historicism; and recorded realism History is surrounding us, all over; each second in time can be reported as a bit of history. This doesn't add up to how little the activity was, or to what extent it took, it is all history. We will compose a custom paper test on Portfolio Tasks Architecture History or on the other hand any comparative theme just for you Request Now The more prominent the impact on a race or culture the more drawn out the second remains with us and is archived through time. This is called Historicism. For instance one of the significant minutes over the most recent 10 years would be 9/1; in spite of the fact that this didn't influence us legitimately the measure of data and documentation of this occasion was immense, stretching out to all countries. To what extent will this second toward the end in history books; will they recollect this second in 100 years? Will it stand the trial of time? Something for a littler scope may last more, similar to creations; things we despite everything use right up 'til today are a steady token of their history and where they originated from. All individuals have an alternate course of events on history, some will accumulate data and not think that its essential or significant, it hasn’t influenced them so it's anything but a significant occasion in history for them. For instance; the Christopher quake is an enormous crossroads in history for us; it has completely changed us and things will never be the equivalent, however for somebody in Denmark, the opposite side of the world, this is a practically unimportant occurring and a miniscule snippet of data. They may have seen a 2-minute clasp on the news and this bit of history won't remain with them. In this manner history is our own little inline of significance; in spite of the fact that we may have similar occasions, they happen in various requests and rankings relying upon the way of life that encompasses you. There may even be a totally unique course of events for another person. None of it is important in light of the fact that history is what is pertinent to you. History is generally bound to one specific second, giving one-individual credit, making sure about their place in the notable books. This in certainty isn’t valid; not one incredible man makes history; there is consistently a basic history behind history. For instance; one incredible man didn't concoct the telescope. This is the common course of creation, one cap takes a thought from a previously existing thing and creates it, improves it and cases it as their own. This thought isn't in every case valid. Developments needed to begin some place, as a rule happening when something is expected to make an undertaking simpler. All developments start some place, however not very many individuals make something from nothing. Also, the battle of being the first is consistently a factor, to stay quiet about your advancement until sufficiently idealized to show to people in general, and by then another person may have outsmarted you. It isn't the extraordinary man who makes notable minutes; it is the significance, need and purposes behind the demonstrations to happen. By Cam McBride Portfolio Task 2 †Cam McBride Ancient Rome Discuss the connections between Ancient Rome and the United States of America as far as in any event two of the accompanying: engineering; political association; philosophy; and domain. Old Rome is an extremely strong base in the realm of engineering; consummating concrete, having huge structures, and utilizing unique strategies created without anyone else. America being America, in my eyes at first took on probably the biggest state to attempt to improve their work, be bolder, greater and better. Antiquated Rome utilized huge segments including steps driving upward giving a feeling of significance, much like the Greeks. This was seen all through their administration structures and town focuses. America’s significant structures are fundamentally the same as thusly, particularly in their political scene. For instance the Washington White House incorporates ventures up to sections spread over the front exterior. Additionally including a focal arch, which the Romans developed and utilized frequently, giving an enormous open focal concentration to the structure. Design is a major piece of the two societies and is viewed as a prevailing power, controlling points of view of control over the individuals. America is viewed as the most impressive country on the planet right now, as old Rome once seemed to be; this is seen and strengthened created their style of engineering. Engineering and structures are continually changing after some time however the base connect to Rome is still there, the impression of intensity is still there, making enormous structures in uncovered environmental factors, sculptures, and uncommon materials. This demonstrates the undeniable connect to Roman design that despite everything stays in our societies, in America as well as all around the globe. Another equal between Roman culture and American culture is the assignment of administrations, or political administration. Making a sheltered domain for the individuals was fundamental for the Romans and America have embraced this style of giving private raciest force and duty of dealing with their own. This in certainty meaner that there is no differentiation among open and private duty, thusly making debasement among the individuals [ (Spangles, 2011)]. Having private associations attempt to comprehend and keep up huge numbers of the open administrations is a poorly conceived notion, things become murky, covering from administration to support, this might be an answer for the present moment yet in the long haul, much like the Roman culture, the results are enormous. They might not have a choice at this stage yet in my eyes, an advanced society like America should eve the minds, the cash and the labor to unravel issues, in contrast to Rome. Assignments like gathering charges, watching the roads and outskirts were once observed as an open errand [ (Spangles, 2011) America has changed this and the advantages don’t appear to exceed the negatives, how much time will go before the open ascent facing and obliterate a totally skilled country, much like Europe is as of now encountering. Portfolio Task 3 †Cam McBride The Medieval World In what ways is this delegate of the medieval world-see? The Chartres house of prayer, likewise known, as the ‘Gothic Cathedral’ is perhaps the best rush in France, eminent for it’s excellent engineering and is an achievement in the development of western progress, the introduction of another time [ (Chartres Cathedral, ND) Very rapidly many chapels showed up utilizing this style, it got productive, which proposes that here and there it was an impression of the medieval world. The gothic style by and large was creative and was a solid delineation of the medieval ages. The structure was made to join space for huge recolored glass windows on the external dividers; accomplished by redirecting the rooftop weight toward focus sections, which, in plan IEEE delineated the image of Christianity, the cross. In this manner heading endlessly from the standard cold dull insides the houses of worship would gangs. The huge rose windows are a tremendous piece of the style and underlined the stature and structure of the structures. Pointed towers and slim towers encompass the structure giving it an exceptionally medieval trademark and again including the basic stature factor. The structure, the improvement and obviously the capacity uncovers the comprehension of the medieval times [ (University, ND) This structure is a portrayal of the medieval perspective as it was when here were colossal varieties of convictions, toward one side of the scale, realism, requiring legitimate or logical evidence for some to genuinely accept an announcement. On the opposite finish of the scale, the radicals, complete dismissal of reason and exclusively depending on trust to get them through [ (Valorous, 2000)]. This wide scope of convictions destroyed individuals and gave them something to be isolated by and contend about. The one thing that didn't change was their confidence in God. Houses of worship were a spot were everybody had shared view, the presence of God was sure, no science was expected to demonstrate it, in spite of the fact that mother wanted to demonstrate their convictions normally instead of going on daze confidence of what has been said to them. This giving the congregation an enormous noteworthiness in the medieval world view as it was the focal center to society, regardless of how unique the perspectives on individuals were inside the general public, God continued as before, a more powerful that to be sure should have been venerated and seen by all. Portfolio Task 4 †Cam McBride Option 2 Using the two readings underneath, clarify what materials and innovation were utilized in old Greek building plan. Most by far of materials utilized in old Greek engineering depended on blend solid and durable normal components. Auxiliary components, for example, segments were at first made from timbers, one of the most straightforward regular materials to assemble and change to a structure material. Stone before long started to supplant timber, primarily for its basic components yet additionally, its trustworthiness appeared to suit the impression of their eternal divine beings that they all love. This was totally suitable because of the reality the sanctuaries were being worked as a portrayal of the divine beings (Hemingway, 2003). The change to stone had a major effect to how the structures looked. As there was a retreat increment in weight, the segments and bolster bars must be nearer together, this gave it an increasingly strong, overwhelming look. This additionally happened in the rooftop pitch. At first they utilized lighter roofing materials considering a more extreme pitch, however the presentation and interpretation into stone implied they began utilizing a scope of earthenware tiles which included an enormous measure of extra weight, diminishing this pitch boundlessly [ (Odyssey, Adventures in Archeology, 2012) Obtaining the stone, for example, marble and limestone was the greatest errand of making an antiquated Greek sanctuary. Balance Is a State of Mind Essay Example For Students

Equalization Is a State of Mind Essay Equalization; it is one characteristic that nearly everybody makes progress toward inside the hardships of regular day to day existence. Be that as it may, the fragile conditions expected to accomplish such a level differ from individual to individual. It is Charles Dickens, in his novel Hard Times, who strolls along an extraordinary tight rope in order to find a medium between the numerous boundaries. Utilizing a mocking point, Dickens recounts to the tale of a network who becomes trapped in the snare of one side of the range, caught with the cool, hard unavoidable truths that apply to everyone. In this universe of inflexible calendars and psyche desensitizing errands, he can viably show the silliness of such conditions. One of the regions most enormously influenced by such contention is that of training. For a long time instructors have been battling to discover the harmony between packing understudies heads with realities, and letting their inventiveness and freewill rule the lear ning procedure. Thomas Gradgrind, the schools superintendent, is one character who can't see the requirement for the parity. His whole instructive framework depended on demonstrated actuality. Gradgrind goes similar to disheartening the creative mind and miracle of the obscure in his understudies. For he accepted that You can just frame the brains of thinking creatures upon Facts: nothing else will ever be of any help to them. However what he neglected to acknowledge was the significance of how innovativeness and feeling influenced self-improvement, yet additionally the general public all in all. Without such upgrades, the kids can turn into a type of strolling ramble, letting out realities without examining and addressing them. These zombies made in the school, grow up to become laborers in the manufacturing plants of the locale. Drudging endlessly for a considerable length of time upon thoughtless assignments, these individuals are decreased to insignificant hands, carefully adding to the constant murmur of the plant. Such a significant number of hundred turns in this Mill; such a large number of hundred pony steam power. They are trapped in the endless loop being treated as a mass, instead of people as they seem to be. Every one of the characters realize something is missing from within their spirit, yet nobody can make sense of the specific missing piece. However to the peruser it is a simple riddle to fathom, for an individual is never finished without the capacity to envision and dream. With the many expanding wholes in the general public, such convictions can't be kept up without some calamity. It is the absence of dynamic quality and vitality that that joins the unforgiving realities that cause a tow n, for example, this to lose its steam and breakdown. Thomas Gradgrind at last results in these present circumstances acknowledgment when his prized girl, Louisa, admits to him in an attack of tension. She dissipated the data of the entirety of the agony and grief that the framework had brought upon her. On account of this abrupt realism of his girl, Thomas acknowledges what she needs to state. He thinks about back the errors of his past and is at long last ready to see the requirement for balance. Gradgrind would now be able to begin to consolidate the utilization of creative mind and inventiveness into his life, just as the lives of others around him. By indicating the extraordinary side of the range in Hard Times, Dickens can communicate what a significant job that balance plays in the public eye. Today as well as for a considerable length of time to come, individuals will endeavor to make sense of a typical parity point for which they can at long last find a sense of contentment with themselves. Hence, it must be recalled that so as to accomplish the balance that is wanted, one must keep a receptive outlook so as to forestall floating excessively near one degree or the other. .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 , .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .postImageUrl , .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .focused content zone { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 , .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:hover , .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:visited , .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:active { border:0!important; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; progress: obscurity 250ms; webkit-change: haziness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:active , .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:hover { murkiness: 1; progress: mistiness 250ms; webkit-progress: haziness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .focused content region { width: 100%; position: relativ e; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enhancement: underline; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; outskirt sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-outskirt range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content enrichment: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: total; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u899 7545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u8997545797ccfb42b54e482866bbb4e0:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: The Giver (rundown of fundamental character) EssayBibliography:

Sexism In The Gaming Industries - Free Essay Example

Playing video games is a fun way to interact with friends or even make new ones. Often men and women will not get along because of the common stereotypes in our society. Today many men like to claim that they are at a higher power than women, these things are not true and can be very offending to some people. This is why today we are trying to eliminate many of these stereotypes to have a more friendly video game environment. First and foremost the percentages of male to female gamers has always been vastly different. According to Kim Gittleson at BBC News today only about 48% of online gamers are female, and very few of them play competitively. Both genders can be equally as good as one another in competitive circumstances, it just depends on how long they have been playing. It can also depend on if they have ever played anything like it before. In addition to this people are often judged by their rank and skill level rather than their personality. Frequently females are assumed to be a bad player if their rank is lower than others. This is another stereotype that is incorrect because all player start off at the same rank, but some players have worked their way up higher than others, so their rank is better. Even out of all the professional competitive players only 1% of them are female. Another problem in our society today is people being harassed, this is one of the most underestimated topics when it comes to sexism in gaming. In addition to this many women in the gaming industries have to face the day-to-day challenge of being threatened with yelling, murder, and much worse. Other players will resort to yelling if a female does not do the correct thing when playing, even if the player is doing everything correctly there is still some unnecessary judgment involved. On the other hand the game designers themselves can be sexist. This is because many people have begun to notice that the female body shapes are all the same, slim and attractive. But the mens body types vary from strong and muscular to small and clever. Some people are offended by the lack of body types and have asked for more of a variety, but not much has changed. Equally important is the sexist dialogue between male and female characters. Many games have interactions between a male and female character and most of the time the male is rude or tries to flirt with the female. Not to mention the way that the majority of female characters are portrayed, they are usually either completely helpless or are rude and self centered. It is very rare to see a strong and independent female character in many games these days. That aside, the statistics between men and women are not very different as well. According to Michele Zorrilla a study made in 2007 shows that men do have better hand eye coordination than women do when playing, but women are much better at strategizing and planning ahead. When it comes to deciding who is better it always depends on the game. Correspondingly men are more likely to rush through a game unlike women who are more likely to take their time. Since men have better hand eye coordination they are generally better at an first person shooter (FPS) while females are great at strategizing, so a puzzle or quest game would be easy for them. Either way it all depends on the amount of time the person has been playing. Factoring in other genres of video games, out of the many sport games players only 2% of them are female. Another shocking percentage is that only 7% of gamers are female when it comes to an Fps. In the big picture males populate most of the Fps and MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role play game) games. Overall both genders are equally as good as one another. Nobody should ever be judged by their rank or skill level, but them as a person. Sexism is just something we cant completely eliminate from our society but we can make it better by reporting it or changing the subject as soon as you can. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect no matter what their gender is.

How to Choose the Best Colleges for Writing Essays

How to Choose the Best Colleges for Writing EssaysTransfer Essay samples are a very good way to assess the writing skills of students that are trying to get into different colleges. The authors may be more than a little biased toward their own course. They use this to their advantage. Some courses can help you get into the best colleges in the country, but not all.The selection of schools for transfer essay samples is extremely important. There are some classes that make it impossible to get into the most prestigious colleges, and that may be one of the reasons why you need to see a few transfer essay samples before you make any decisions. Consider your college major carefully when you are making this decision. When you enter your college's entrance exam, you will be using this sample essay to try to convince the faculty that you should be accepted into the school. The faculty will be reviewing your work before they take a final decision on you. You may be shocked at how hard the prof essors really are about making sure that only the best candidates are admitted. There is no room for bias here, because the judges are looking for real essays that you wrote. If you get all the help you need to prepare for this essay, you will find that you do not need any help from your advisor or a tutor. This means that you can write an essay for the first time without having to worry about whether or not you can write a dissertation. But then again, you may want to go with a research paper instead, which gives you a different opportunity to test your writing skills. Not every essay needs to be about your major, so be aware of that when you are making this decision. Keep in mind that if you enter a class that is directly related to your major, the instructor will give you a list of the most popular essays in your course. The usual problems that come up with the teacher looking over your work are due to the fact that you did not spend enough time on preparing your topic. Some colleg es will give you extra time for just that reason. If you do not know how to do this, be aware that you will not be able to be accepted into those colleges.Having already finished your first draft, however, make sure that you do not turn your attention to something else when you get to the 'submission' stage of the essay. The essay is what you will spend the rest of the semester on, so you need to make sure that you do not add or change your topic until your essay is complete. Otherwise, the writer who is grading your essay will notice the subject changes and put you at a disadvantage. Some subjects may be added or changed after you have submitted your essay, so be sure that you do not get sidetracked in this process. Now that you have a good idea of where to find these samples, you should also make sure that you read the instructions properly. Make sure that you choose a college that is directly related to your major, because if you do not, the professors will see your essay and reme mber that you did not spend enough time preparing it.

Germany s Mobilization For World War I - 1363 Words

On August 14, 1914, the German Reichstag commenced to make known that the German civilians should unite and defend their own country. They announced a â€Å"civil peace† which meant that all previous conflicts or issues would be set aside for the duration of war. They also began the mobilization for World War I. When the emperor first declared the policy in 1914, the people were joyful and in awe. By 1915 and 1916, the people’s views shifted from being optimistic to opposing war because war caused them to overwork and was the source for the food shortages; the government lost many of their supporters as a result. To end, in 1918, civilians from both sides who was either opposing war or supporting it affected the German population because of their different opinions which led to the defeat of Germany in World War I. Most people in Germany supported the emperor’s idea of â€Å"civil peace†. The other people who disagreed were forced to agree whether they like the idea or not. In August 1, 1914, German Emperor Wilhelm II gave a speech at the royal palace in Berlin filled with a crowd of 40,000 people. Wilhelm II desired to unite the country by telling his people that â€Å"all that matters now is that we Germans stand together like brothers† (Doc 1). The speech that he conveyed rallied up the Germans to hope for the unification of their country by standing up together as brothers to help unite Germany. Dallas ISD Needs A New System of Governance In the 1990’s, I grew up taking the TAAS test or Texas Assessment of Academic Skills. I did not know why we had to take them but everyone had to and teachers tried to prepare us as much as they can. Then in the 2003, the state decided to change it to TAKS test or Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. I knew that I had passed, but as a student we do not question why we have to take these tests. Because we are a large district there are problems with the funding and getting good teachers to teach at the schools in Dallas. If we are constantly changing the test format and we keep getting lower scores who would want to work for Dallas ISD. By changing the format of tests students take they have to reassess their objectives in each respective grade level. Teachers are often forced to teach for the tests rather than their subject. It used to be that we were only graded by our teachers and how they taught their classes. We only had to make sure that we knew the subject matter as taught by the teacher. Then standardized testing came into play which made it fair for all the students because teachers had a power over student’s grades. A system of checks and balances came into play and standardized testing became the norm . How do you account for the co existence of poverty Essay Example For Students

How do you account for the co existence of poverty Essay and prosperity in Britain during the interwar years? In this essay I am going to examine how and why there was both prosperity and poverty within Britain throughout the interwar years. The war left Britain with a weakened economy, after a brief post war boom ending in April 1921 Britain was in a position where the pre war staple industries such as coal mining were no longer providing jobs. This caused the problem of unemployment concentrated in certain areas. However there was another side to Britains economy that was on the rise, thought there was mass unemployment for some others where becoming very prosperous. Some of the population where living in good conditions, receiving paid holidays while others where unemployed and living in poverty. There was great diversity in the health care available in different areas. Prosperous peoples real wage rose as prices feel. Prosperous area had never had it so good while areas of poverty where living in poor conditions with bad health and insufficient food supply. The prosperous people had a lot more on offer to them and leisure rose tremendously. People had more to spend on entertainment and leisure than before, in 1939 20 million people visited the coasts of England. Dance halls where also very popular in the 1930s as a source for enjoyment and for a nice evening out. Family sizes gradually lowered in working class families and this meant that they had even more money to spend. During the interwar years there was a change between the vast amounts of blue-collar workers from before world war one to becoming more white-collar workers due to the growth of new industry. The rise in real wages and the gradual decrease in family size meant that the middle class now had much more disposable income, this was seen by the amount spent on leisure. Gambling became Britains second biggest industry in 1939 with 10million people every week. A lot of the people in lower classes and from the areas of poverty also played in the chance of winning. Due to mass unemployment many families where living in poverty, having worked previously in staple industrys theses workers found themselves unemployed with no jobs available to them. During world war one the problems with staple industries had been masked by the need for war supplies. After the war the problem of employment in these industries then arose. This left the men who had been in job in the staple industries without a job. There was support from the government for the unemployed but the benefits they received were not close to the wage they had previously had. This made their life style very hard, the death rates in these areas rose greatly. Many of the parents would go without so they children could eat sufficiently making them weak and unhealthy. One factor in the coexistence of poverty and prosperity was the geographical position of industries. Before world war one staple industries such as coal mining where heavily concentrated in the north of England, Scotland and south Wales. These areas where worst hit by unemployment and poverty. The great poverty in these areas was not seen in others because they had not relied on the staple industries to provide jobs. The decline in old staple industries was accompanied by a growth in new industries such as electrical engineering, motor manufacture, man made fibres and chemicals. These newer industries where located mostly to the south particularly between the east midlands and London. Areas where new industries where located was where the prosperity was. People had well paid jobs. This in turn meant that the health was higher in these areas. It was higher for many reasons, many house holds would contribute small sums to support their local hospitals, in areas of poverty people could not afford to contribute so the hospitals where of low quality. Another way the health was better was because there was a better diet in prosperous areas, there was a greater range of foods and enough to go round. Although money was being put into health new facilities where unevenly spread, the services where unavailable to lower class families. The situation in areas of poverty was very different. There would not be enough food for the family and it was often seen that married women became very ill as they would put their family first and not eat sufficient amounts. These two very different conditions where able to coexist in the same country as they where separate from one another, the poverty and prosperity was physically separated. Trifles by Susan Glaspell EssayIn conclusion there are many ways to account for the coexistence of poverty and prosperity. The weak economy after the war very quickly led to unemployment despite a small post war boom. Unemployment set in in areas where staple industries had been concentrated. This meant that unemployment was concentrated in these areas too. With the industries down the economy of these areas sunk dramatically. The location of new industries in the south, away from staple industries meant that these areas where safer from unemployment. With the development of new industries came the improvement of housing, health care and leisure for those with the money. The rise in real wage along with the decrease in family size meant that people had a lot more disposable income in these areas. The poorer people did not have access to any of the developments or improvements and where simply stuck where they where. With no money to move there was no chance of getting a job in a ne w industry, loss of possessions and being forced to sell and pawn items for money didnt provide enough for the people living in poverty. A key factor in the coexistence of poverty and prosperity is that they are geographically separate. The poor could not access the developments. The new industries provided new things for the prosperous to purchase, motorcars gave them the chance to move in to suburban areas and drive to other places. Another key reason is that the government did not do enough to bring about real changes to the unemployed and the people themselves where unable to get them selfs out of the poverty. Unemployment benefit was low and was not enough to allow families to save to move. It was only just enough to live on. The population living in poverty had no options they where stuck where they where receiving to little or no help from the authorities, this left mass areas in bad conditions which could not be changed as there was no money to change the conditions with. People where healthy in the prosperous areas and in areas of poverty the people just had to make, doing as they could.

Generally speaking there are certain constants one Essay Example For Students

Generally speaking there are certain constants one Essay can expect form a noir film. Typically a noir film has a plot which depicts the dark and inhumane side of human nature with cynicism, and with emphasis on the brutal, unhealthy, shadowy, dark and sadistic sides of the human experience. In a film like Chinatown (1974), a modern-day film noirthriller, the criteria of the dark side of society is fulfilled by Jakes investigation of the deceiving world of high crime. Through hard-boiled character of Jake Gittes the audience is shown the facade that hides what is sinister and the corrupt in bleak world of noir. Nevertheless this dark element in the film contributes to a greater metaphoric symbol of noirs social comment about the malaises of society. Aside form the unsettling mood of alienation, disillusionment, disenchantment, and pessimism in the world of Chinatown. It shares great likeness with other classic noir films through its characters, particularly with its anti-hero, Jake Gittes and the enigmatic heroine Evelyn Mulray. In film noir, men serve the purpose of the oedipal struggle between the son and individual against forces outside the realm of his control. The character of Jake reluctantly takes on this struggle as the leading male protagonist. Throughout the film Jakes investigation of the story, he uncovers secrets under many layers of coverups, and deception. In unraveling complicated facts, he is deliberately audacious and over confident in deriving explanations for the deeply flowing corruption he unearths. Moreover this is his undoing, compromising his approach to the case he has in turn offset the balance between the good and the evil in the noir scenario, by he himself being apart of the corrupt and indifferent in the noir world. Jakes flaws are meant to coincide with the dark world of the noir. He is the anti-hero with a tarnished past history. Although the film does not elaborate on the details about the tragedy that occurred in his past, it is clear that Jake had been affected deeply and it was the result of the whole attitude of indifference about every thing in Chinatown at the time. In Chinatown no one ever cared or did anything. As a result, Jake is more keen to corruption and the power of money than to the more immediately detrimental corruption of morals by Noah to his daughter Evelyn. Despite Jakes failed attempt to uncover the mystery by himself, he is still given the chance to help right the wrongs of the noir world by helping the victimized Evelyn and her daughter Katherine escape the dark influence of the villainous father Noah. To Jakes dismay the child is not a vision of pureness, but an inbred offspring of immorality and lies. Eventually Jake reasoned that this was an opportunity for a new beginning, at least for those most affected by this world. Everyone has an afflicted past and a dark secret. This was his chance to bury the darkness for both himself and the child. But in the end, hes unable to break free from the constraints of money and power. De gradation prevails and Jakes left to think about how his fate is again shut down by these evil forces. His masculine instincts to separate good from evil to save the good and punish the evil has failed him in the metaphoric real world of Chinatown by the films climax. Retrospectively, Gittes who is the protagonist of a modern-noir film is an innovation on the classical male protagonist. He unlike other noir heros fails to defeat the dark side of the noir world, instead he loses his femme fatale brings tragedy to his good woman. .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 , .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .postImageUrl , .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 , .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:hover , .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:visited , .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:active { border:0!important; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:active , .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235 .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u373041dda76103f1d3f386fd8785f235:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A good man is hard to find 2 EssayConversely women in film noir serve to express skepticism toward the family and the values that it supports. With few exceptions, noir films divide women into two categories: the femme fatale, an independent, ambitious woman who feels confined within a marriage or a closed male-female relationship and attempts to break free, usually with violent results; the nurturing woman, who is often depicted as dull, featureless, and, in the end, unattainable. Character of Evelyn is one such variation on the female in film noir. She effectively starts out on the femme fatale side of the spectrum and ended up in the role of the good woman at the end of the film. In stark contrast to the visual and narrative representation of the family home is that of the femme fatale herself. An example of this being Evelyn at the beginning of the film. In her first encounter with Jake, she is able to govern her relationship with Jake. Moreover in the role of the femme fatale she exudes a unique sexuality, which she uses to her advantage to define herself and manipulate Jake in order to retain her independence from an oppressive patriarchal relationship. Her body, her actions, her words, and her ability to hold the cameras gaze create a highly charged sexual image that defies attempts by the men in her life and by the film itself to control her or return her to her proper role as a woman. In fact Evelyn fools Jake into thinking that she is a classic femme fatale who resorts to murder to free herself from an unbearable relationship with a man who would try to possess and abuse her, as if she were a piece of property or a pet. Furthermore a classi c femme fatale usually manipulates her man into murdering her oppressor. Evelyn however Evelyn had no such wish for the retribution of her suffering caused by Noah. Film noirs subversive view of family life and womens accepted role in society extends to its portrayal of the good or normal woman. The good woman embraces her traditional place in the family, but she is out of place in film noir. Such was the case with Evelyn when Jake coerced her into revealing the true nature of her relationship with the Katherine mystery girl. When she finally confesses that Katherine was in fact her daughter who was inbred, her true role as the good woman was finally exposed to Jake. As the good woman she offers the hero a chance to escape from the sexy, destructive femme fatale and the dangerous noir world. Nonetheless the good woman often proves to be a mirage that the hero cannot reach. Jake as a result of finding out the truth about Evelyns tragic circumstance find his affair with the femme fata le eclipsed by Evelyns transition to the good woman now accepting her role as the traditional motherly figure. The good woman is by no means the prescription for proper female behavior. However the lack of excitement offered by the safe woman is clearly contrasted with the sensual, passionate appeal of the other, with whom the detectives destruction seemed inevitable. In the role of the good woman she remains passive, nurturing, and nonthreatening. Ultimately, the world of the good woman and normal family values contrasts sharply with the dominant world of film noir in both visual style and narrative content, as if the cultural ideal of family life is a mere fantasy for the noir characters. In film noir, the American dream is indeed a dream. Chinatown unlike many of its precursors is a modern film noir. It earns its distinction from the other noir movies because it found room to innovate while still using past noirfilms as its template. Within the familiar backdrop of the dirty and corrupt noir world, the film brilliantly avoids cliches through the uses of Jake Gittes the anti-hero and Evelyn Mulray, who is best described as a hybrid of the femme fatal and the good woman. Even as she is killed of while trying to flee the noir world to become a good woman in the final reel, she lingers in the audiences imagination as a sexually exciting, sensual being who remained defiant to the bitter end against those who had tried to control her.

rise of hitler (1914-1933) essays

rise of hitler (1914-1933) essays He was one of the greatest leaders in history. Yet by the end of World War II (1945), tens of millions of humans had been slaughtered, on his command. He was a moving force that affected the entire globe. And although he didnt succeed in his ambition to dominate the world, who will ever forget the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler? After living homeless in the back streets of Vienna for four years, a young orphan man called Adolf was looking for any means of escape. In 1913 Hitler moved to Munich, the capital of Germany, as he could no longer sustain a job in Vienna. The other reason he moved to Germany was that he hated the fact that Austria was a 'patchwork nation', but most of all his despised the nation of its 'ever-present fungoid growth of Jews'. Although he believed his financial situation would solve in Munich, he failed to maintain a job as a carpenter, architecture's draftsman and watercolourist. That same year he was called upon on behalf of the Austrian Army to take a physical examination, although he was later passed, as the results showed he was unfit for services in the army. When war was declared in August 1914, he saw his chance for change. He gave up his Austrian citizenship as he did not want to fight for Austria. He felt he belonged to Germany and it was his duty to fight for his people (Germans). He eagerly signed up for the German Army, and was accepted. Like Hitler, many young men volunteered for the war. Many people predicted it would only be a short war, so people willing to take part for the adventure in hopes of seeing some action. No one thought it would last for four years, wiping out an entire generation of men and hold a death toll of millions. In the war Adolf was one of only a few messengers, who fought on the Western Front for most of the war. He was never the most popular person in anyone's mind, but the war was the first place where Hitler felt purpose and really felt a sense of belo...

Religion and philosophy of Asia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Religion and philosophy of Asia - Essay Example The beliefs are known to create a significant link between the way in which politics form as well as the traditions and rituals that become a part of a specific country. The concept of building a social identity is one which is based on the belief system, which begins with the individual and familial concepts of what it means to belong to a specific culture. This is followed by the cultural identity that is accepted in the mainstream and which creates a specific response when different events occur. The belief system then begins to reflect how society should respond as well as what is expected with the main functions of the government, all which change the main functions of each region. The main belief system which began to change Asia was the growth of Buddhism that spread throughout China, Korea and other parts of Asia. The knowledge which was received about Buddhism created specific types of understanding and belief related to superhuman achievements and being able to overcome specific situations through the practice. This also dictated different laws. The trend which grew from this emerged with different intellectual groups as well as monks that began to practice the different belief systems and which developed into the political mainstream to offer guidance about overcoming and achieving different parts of life with the belief system in place. The beliefs of the culture could then be focused on the virtue and main application of laws that were a part of Buddhism and the political powers.

ArelorMittal's policy in relation to dealing with cultural and social Essay

ArelorMittal's policy in relation to dealing with cultural and social environments - Essay Example Last year the company shipped more than quarter of million tons to the region. Renault has announced to set up a factory in Morocco to serve the customers of Europe and North Africa. The company has mills in Spain and France and supplies steel to Casablanca. ArcelorMittal has extended their footprints in Morocco which was identified as the potential country of the Maghreb region. In order to meet the requirements of Renaults, ArcelorMittal made serial deliveries to Melloussa from December, 2011. The company entered into agreements with leading appliance producing corporations and ensured supply of steel for the production process. To offer steel to the oil and gas industry the company is refining the products as well as identifying the existing steels which are suited for the energy sector. New markets are opening up for the company on the edges of Europe. Turkey is one such country. France and Canada are some of the countries where ArcelorMittal has entered. The company also has ope rations in Brazil and Mexico. Altogether the presence of the company is in 60 countries worldwide. Problems in integrating business The company needs to shift beyond the good intensions on social issues and turn the words into deeds. Although the company plays its part in corporate social responsibility it continues to pollute the environment. According to the new report of Global Action on ArcelorMittal the company risks the lives and displaces local communities. The resettlement plans for the local people were unclear while the company started iron ore mining operations in Nimba County, Liberia (ArcelorMittal Group-a, 2012, pp. 21-24). The people were deprived from permanent employment in the mine and posed a threat o the Mount Nimba Nature Reserve. According to the authorities of the Friends of the Earth Liberia the lack of transparency in the management is a concern when one studies the track records of the company on other countries. The residents of Eastern Europe and South Af rica complain that the company has done little in reducing the high levels of air pollution. The approach of the company towards reduction of air pollution has not been effective although several meetings were conducted with the local communities (ArcelorMittal Group, 2010, pp. 14-15). The European steel plants of ArcelorMittal benefited from huge amount of loans directed to them from the International Finance Corporation but the area of reducing pollution still remains ignored. The safety investments of ArcelorMittal have remained unchanged for Kazakhstan for quite a long time. In spite of the health and safety projects 35 miners lost their lives in the mines of the company in 2008 in two separate incidents. The city of Temirtau is chocked with pollution even now. Questions can be raised regarding the ethics of the company. The company established a mechanism for the employees with which they can raise their concerns against an issue in the working environment (ArcelorMittal-a, 201 2). The procedures are confidential and whistle blowing. The trade unions also work for the purpose of upgrading the safety requirements. The company grievance mechanisms were developed to be in line with the principles of human rights and business of United States. Exit from the market In order to cut down the debt problems, ArcelorMittal took the initiative in scaling down the investments

Indus River Essay Example for Free

Indus River Essay The Indus and Ganges river valleys are ideal locations for early settlements. Some of the reasons are good water supply, good farmland, and rivers for trade. And those are just some of the reasons people choose to live there. Why were the Indus and Ganges river valleys ideal locations for early settlement? They were ideal because they were ideal because they were by rivers so you would always have drinking water. The valleys also had some of the best farmland. The farmland was so fertile because, the snow on the mountains would melt and flood the rivers, so the silt would make the soil fertile. They were also ideal because you could use the rivers for trading. How were the Indus and Ganges river valleys affected by the land nearby? They were affected by the mountains because, the melted ice carried down from the mountains to provide a good supply of water. The mountains affected the Indus and Ganges river valleys in bad ways also. In the fall they got their heaviest rains so the rivers flooded destroying the crops on the banks of the rivers. Another physical feature that is UNSUITABLE is the Thar Desert. It is unsuitable because the only time there is water is during monsoon season. Well, actually there is water but you might have to walk for days to find it. You also would be at risk of no food because the only animals that live in the Thar Desert are lizards, snakes, gazelles, quail, ducks, and geese. Another UNSUITABLE physical feature is the Himalaya Mountains. The Himalayas are unsuitable because fierce storms can dump ten feet of snow at a time on one area. Another reason is you have no food because nothing wants to live in the cold mountains. You also have no water, and when you get to the timberline you will need an oxygen tank. The Indus and Ganges river valleys are ideal locations for early settlements. Some of the reasons are good water supply, good farmland, and rivers for trade. And those are just some of the reasons people choose to live there. If I had to choose somewhere to live in ancient India I would choose the Indus and Ganges river valleys.

DOUBLE SPEAK Essay -- essays research papers

Doublespeak  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Doublespeak, whether intentional or unintentional is communication that is obscure, pompous, vague, evasive and confusing.() In most instances, doublespeak tries to achieve a particular objective as is the case in President Bush’s address to the nation on September 11, after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The objective of this speech is clearly to mollify the emotions of a frightened nation and at the same time set the tone for what is to come as a result of the attacks. In this speech one can find many examples of doublespeak. These examples seem to be intentional although they defy typical doublespeak in that the doublespeak is not intended for any personal gains and is not concealed with a lot of convoluted language. If one can understand some of the basic principles about making sense of media-speak then the domino effect of this type of speech can be reduced.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the first statements President Bush makes in his speech can be classified as doublespeak. When he say’s â€Å"Our way of life, our very freedom came under attack,† he is indirectly saying that everything Americans are accustomed to and enjoy is at stake. With these simple words and the tone chosen to deliver them President Bush is strategically taking the emotions of the American people for a ride while making it clear that the American people are his target audience. An important principle for properly deciphering this instance of doublespeak is to unload first responses and get them out in the open so the rest of the message can be received clearly and unobstructed by inner thoughts. Other examples of doublespeak that fit into the same category as the previous one are when President Bush uses the phrases, â€Å"Foundation of America† and â€Å"Steel of American Resolve.† Both of these examples attempt to evoke an emotional resp onse although, the emotions attempting to be extracted are different from those in the beginning of the speech. They differ because they set the tone for new offensive and secure feelings opposed to the original feelings of defense and endangerment. This example also illustrates how obscure doublespeak can be.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  President Bush regards the attacks as despicable and evil acts. The word evil is the doublespeak in this example. The way he uses this word automati... ...nbsp;  Ã‚  Ã‚  G-d is stronger than any human on earth. Walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Not fearing the terrorists because of such a tragedy in close proximity. Every walk of life  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  All races, genders, and cultures. Resolve for justice and peace  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  We are going to war. Eliminating Mediaspeak: Is it Clear Now?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Doublespeak is deceptive as are most of the examples mentioned from this speech. On the contrary, doublespeak as explored through this example is sometimes a necessary tool to address an issue in a manner that is politically correct. When the doublespeak present in this speech is eliminated the underlying themes are not entirely lost and the speech is still effective. I think given the circumstances the audience was pleased with the underlying messages delivered and probably expected them making it easier to decipher President Bush’s jargon. The speech could have been delivered without doublespeak and more directly, but the perception of the audience would likely remain the same.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚
